Alexandria Resort on Lake Miltona - Woodland Resort Vacations MN

  • Memorial Day Weekend - Fishing Conditions!

We were busy this weekend with many families getting out to fish

including our own!  Last night Steve went out with our new

rental boat (90 HP Princecraft with console).

I was surprised how long they stayed out considering

there was a 6 and 4 year old on the boat.

They came back with walleye and perch to eat for dinner

and also caught many bass and sunnies

in the process right out front of the resort!

Here is a picture of my niece Lucy and her smallmouth.

Another group came in last night with 6 keeper walleyes

and caught many more in just a couple of hours.

  • Docks Go In with Some Kickball!

So the docks went in last night - it was a great night!

After the guys were done we cooked them brats on the grill.

My 6 year old Luke could not resist and asked them to play a

game of kickball.  They quickly ran to the playground.  We were

not sure who was more excited, Luke or the guys!

I guess we will be finding a new home for them soon,

  • Fishing Report for May 6th

This week of fishing has been a little difficult with the wind but there are have been some ok reports of catching crappies in the shallows or many start starting to move back out the cabbage beds and summer haunts. Many people are using bobbers to catch the fish. The best bait has been flu-flus, Tube jigs or plain hook tip with minnows. The best colors have ranged but overall the best colors have been black, chart or red with white. If you move out to the deeper water range the best bite has been on white twister tails on a 1/16 ounce jig head. The water temperatures are ranging from 49 to 52 degrees depending on where you are on the lake.
  • Carlos Creek Special Event Dates

I was speaking with Tami from the winery the other day. Tami and Kim and the rest of the Carlos Creek Winery staff have been doing an amazing job, since they took over the winery about two years ago.  We are one of the closest resorts to the winery, so we have the pleasure of sending many of our guests over to the winery for an afternoon of wine tasting and maybe a tour of the grounds.  Even in the heart of a Minnesota winter, our guests always come back to the resort with rave reviews of the staff, facility and of course the outstanding wines they are making!
The dates for the Food and Wine Festival (A.K.A. Grape Stomp) will be September 17 to 19. We have just a couple of our cabins still available that weekend.  Also a fairly new event is the Applefest and Catapult Contest in Mid-October. This event will be a lot of fun!  Check out the web site for the winery. There is a link on our web site on the Attractions page.
  • More Miltona walleye

The Nelsons from Sioux Falls are staying at Woodland for about 10 days this spring.  They are a wonderful older couple that have always enjoyed fishing. They spent the day on the lake with Drake yesterday. Mr. Nelson told me afterwards that it was possibly the best day of fishing they have ever had.  His wife caught a 5.5 pound smallmouth and they had another smallmouth taken by a huge Musky just as they  got it to the boat.

They also managed a limit of walleye for each of them. Each walleye was between 19 and 20 inches, except for 2 that were 22".  They released a 27" walleye as well as a few other 20"+ walleye.

All on lindy rigs in the cabbage beds!  The guides have been dialed in on the walleye the last week or so!  It makes for some great stories when our guests return from the lake!

  • Steve's first Miltona Walleye of the season.

I dont get many opportunities to go fishing in the spring, however, I got a call from Ben with H&H Guides to see if I wanted to hop on his boat while he did a little prefishing yesterday.

Miltona has some great walleye fishing opportunities and it is very enjoyable to spend a few hours with a pro! I always learn a few things!  I was certainly happy that I spent the time with Ben, not only is he a nice guy, but he also put me on my fish walleye of the season - a 26" brute, caught on a lindy rig and shiner in about 16' of water.

  • Memorial Day Walleye

Memorial Day weekend was beautiful on Lake Miltona!  The weather was perfect and the fish were very cooperative!  The Schoeler group caught tons of big Sunfish and Crappie with the kids and grandkids, while the Biermas did the same. The Crappie were still up shallow and offered nonstop action.  The Bierma guys managed to find some nice eater walleye in the evening, as well.

The real story, however, came from the Cullen guys who spent a few days with Drake from H&H Guides. They found lots of walleye, ranging from the 16-17" eating size, all the way up to a few 27" walleye.  Last year, while they were fishing with Ben from H&H Guides, they got a 29" walleye that they had mounted. This year, they added a 19.5 " smallmouth Bass that will go on the wall, as well.  The Cullen guys are now planning a fall trip to hit Miltona with Brad Hoppe of Muskie Mayhem, in search for one of those 50" Miltona Monsters.

Check out our Picture Gallery where a few pictures of the walleye from the weekend are posted.

  • Windy Weekend

The second weekend of the fishing season was a tough one!  A strong cold front moved through the area on Friday, bringing in a big drop in temperatures and extremely windy conditions, making fishing all but impossible through Saturday afternoon.  Temperatures Saturday morning dropped to the low 30's with a wind chill into the teens, and winds gusting to over 40 miles per hour.

However, all of our fishing groups did get out on Saturday evening. The reports were varied, with the Krieman group finding a 1/2 dozen 14-16 inch walleye on the deeper drop-off.  A few nice crappie, including a 14.5 inch fish were caught, as well.

The forecast is for an "up and down" week, with some nicer weather finally settling in by Memorial Day weekend.  We are looking forward to some warmer temperatures!

  • Nice Springtime Crappie

More Springtime Crappie! Sunday was another successful day on the lake!

  • Fishing Opener 2009

The Walleye Opener on Lake Miltona was a huge success - and not for the reason you might think! The Crappie fishing was amazing! The Peterson Guys took the new Pontoon Boat out for the afternoon and came back with a 40+ Crappie 12-14 inches.  Jeff said it was the best fishing they had ever experienced!

The Poor Group and the Beardsley guys got plenty of action as well, with everyone catching thier limit of the huge slab Crappie.

Spring time crappie fishing on Miltona can be outstanding and we are in it right now!  Focus on the northern bays with pencil reeds and cat tails, use Twister Tails, Flu Flu's and Mop Tops, all tipped with a minnow.

Of course we had rain yesterday - it is a tradition to have foul weather for the opener, however, the sun is out this morning and it looks like a nice day... now I just need to convince Michelle that it will be a nice Mothers Day event, if we try a little Crappie fishing ourselves, this afternoon!

Here is a pitcure of Dan and John with a board of 14" Crappie:
